STEPi
Squaring the Education Pyramid Institute (STEPi) is the main program of Utopia Foundation that creates and distributes various children’s books and literacy resources to the communities in mostly Western, Eastern and Southern Africa.
The STEPi manifesto is inspired by the belief of founder, Paul H. Sutherland, to "square the pyramid." When we are born, we do not choose our parents nor the location where we are born. Beginning in early childhood, there are children and families who already have more privilege and access than others, those who live in a world of choices. Society spends significantly more resources on those who reach the top of the pyramid: on higher education and an elite workforce.
STEPi believes it's time to create an inclusive education system based on the science of brain development, early childhood studies, and the science behind positive education, positive psychology, and social emotional intelligences. The culturally relevant books and resources created by STEPi are brought to life by local illustrators, designers, and printers in the regions where it operates in Africa. These books and resources are intended to encourage curiosity in the children and show them the importance of education. They also always include important social or societal messages, and encourage the children to stand up for what they believe in. These books and resources are distributed across various under-resourced communities in Africa by STEPi’s Community Engagement Coordinators and partners alike.
STEPi wants to ensure that children are prepared, willing, and happy when they reach adulthood. It wants every child to have choices when they reach maturity, so that they are equipped with the tools needed to become adults that prosper and thrive.
