Meet “Mamu”, 2012 CNN Hero of the Year, Pushpa Basnet of Kathmandu, Nepal. In Nepal, if a parent is sentenced to prison and there is no local guardian for their children, the children go to prison along with the parent. In 2005, at age 21, Pushpa witnessed this injustice first hand as she toured a prison in Kathmandu. That day she dedicated herself to freeing these children, giving them an education and giving them a chance at life. Now, at 29,Pushpa raises 50 children full time and 25 more that return to the prison at night. She has been evicted 5 times since her start, as landlord after landlord has ask her to leave when they discover these are the children of inmates. Now, with the help of many, and a recent purchase of a plot of land, she hopes to build her Butterfly Home to give stability and support to these children-- with no fear of having to find another home for her "family." Pushpa believes that providing these children with a good education is their only chance for survival and to reverse the cycle of crime within their community.
Waiting for Mamu is the documentary of Pushpa's story, told through the children that she has saved. Over 100 children have been rescued, raised and returned to their families. Your gifts will help provide a loving home with warm meals and clothing, support administrative costs, provide health care and education for the children living in Pushpa’s care.
