Microloans are the Utopia Foundation’s first love. Microcredit provides small loans to entrepreneurs that may not qualify for funding through conventional banking systems, allowing an individual to begin, or build the capacity of, a microenterprise, which in turn leads to economic sustainability and independence. 

The Utopia Foundation endorses and invests in a unique microlending model that incorporates the process of Group Lending (borrowing groups that share in the responsibility of repayment of loans) with strong, informal and formal Educational programs. Our existing programs invest in entrepreneurs in the Rural Western Highlands of Guatemala and domestically in Leelanau County, Michigan.

Research has shown that individuals involved in identifying and resolving their own solutions to poverty are more likely to:

• Benefit from better nutrition and health education
• Benefit from education for themselves as entrepreneurs
• Send their children to school
• Benefit from increased social capital in their communities, and become agents of change
